Yes, I Really Said It........
I feel like celebrating today. It's a real joy for me to see so many good Christian themed movies out for a change. Last night at church I saw a wonderful movie titled "Octoberbaby". If you have not seen it, you should. It looks at abortion and adoption from a whole different perspective. The child's. As I watched, I thought about all the little girls and boys who did not survive their mother's abortion. Then my mind drifted to people I know, family members even, who were pregnancies that were unplanned and some for a while even unwanted. Babies who might have been aborted had their mothers made that choice. And I was sickened. I can't imagine a world without those people in it. What a loss it would be.
Now I know there are people who make the argument that there are so many unloved children in the world that ending abortion would just cause more children to suffer. While that may or may not be true, I believe excuses can be found for any sin. And to me there is no question about abortion being a sin. There I said it. An unforgivable sin....not at all. But sin at any rate.
I've read the stats. I've personally seen the repurcussions of abortion on those moms years later. It is not pretty. Guilt, anguish, longing, all of those play a part for many mothers who made that choice. I have seen even more families who long for a child. Would give anything to be a parent. Yet there are few infants and children available for adoption. There are a couple of reasons for the low number of children available for adoption in this country. First is the number of abortions performed each year, and secondly those who choose to have their children most often keep them now. The stigma is gone, and they make the choice to raise their child.
Sometimes I am frightened about the decisions we make as a country. Amazingly, our government is extremely concerned about people having guns, but not legalized abortion. It seems a little strange to me. The news buzzes about shootings where a few people are killed. These are tragedies, and we should know about them. But the numbers of children killed by abortion are thousands of times bigger, and few are concerned about that.
I believe the reasons for a woman deciding to have an abortion are varied, but I think there is one reason that applies to most of the sins we commit. In my experience, most sins have to do with something that makes us feel good (or feel better anyway). Basic selfishness. Think about it. Most of my sins have been committed because it would make me feel better. Maybe it's to solve or avoid a problem. It could be to feed a need I think I have....to make me feel better. Think of 5 sins you have committed and decide why you did it. I'll bet the bottom line is how it made you feel.
Feelings can not be trusted . Believe me, relying on feelings is the fastest way in the world to start on the road to disaster. As a society, I believe we are so enamoured with the " feel good" principle that we no longer consider things like duty, morality, God's will, or even the feelings of others. Also, we certainly adhere to the "survival of the fittest" principle. I get what I want because I am strong enough or brave enough or crafty enough to do it. Some people are even considered " damaged" or dispensable because of some physical or mental flaw. Scary, isn't it. Sounds like playing God to me.
Each life is valuable. The Bible tells us in Psalms 139:13 , "For you created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb.". If we believe in a God who doesn't make mistakes and a God who has a perfect plan for our lives, then we have to believe that every pregnancy and every child born is part of that plan. And it is WAY past time to take a stand to protect those who can't protect themselves.
